Overview

3D FileSystem Profiler provides 3D visual representation of file system statistics. It allows quick, visual analysis of the disk space usage.

Getting Started

When the application starts, first the main application frame is displayed. Then the Select Directory dialog window appears. A single or multiple directories can be selected. After selecting directories, press the Select Directory button. If the selection dialog is cancelled by pressing the Cancel button, then the application will not display any data.

The selected directories will be the top node of the visual representation of the file system.

To select another top level node, press the Select Directory button . The Select Directory dialog window will reappear to make the new selection:

Scanning large file systems will take a long time (like selecting the root directory as the top node). Directory scanning can be cancelled by pressing the Stop button anytime.

Data

The blue boxes represent the directories. Their height shows the total size used by all the sub-directories and files under each directory. Their depth shows the total number of files and sub-directories under each directory.

The pale green, transparent box on the right side of the panel represents the total size and the total count of the files in the current directory.

The vertical lines inside the box represents each file in the current directory. Height of the vertical lines shows the size of the files. For performance reasons, exactly one line is not drawn for each file if the number of files are greater than 300.

Note: Inaccessible files and directories will not register in the total disk space usage count.

Navigating

The current directory is represented by the bottom yellow band.

To view all the sub-directories and files under the current directory double click on the blue boxes.

To move up on the directory path that is being displayed, double click on the yellow bands. Each band shows the nodes of the current path being displayed:

Linear & Logarithmic Views

The application can show the file statistics either on a linear scale or a logarithmic scale. Logarithmic scale is the default. To view the data in a linear scale, press on the Linear button  . To view the data in logarithmic scale, press the Logarithmic button

Following figures show the linear and logarithmic views of the same data (linear on the left, logarithmic on the right):

Tabular Representation

The application also shows the data in tabular form. To view the tabular data, press on the Text button . Pressing the button again will hide the window. The following figure shows the window that displays the tabular data:

File Access Rights

The user running the application must have access to the contents of the file system for accurate calculation of the total file sizes. For system and multi-user space profiling, the application must be run as the user root (or Administrator).

Native Platform Tools

3D FileSystem Profiler collects file system information only using the the JavaTM 2 libraries. Native file system tools may show a different view of the file system and treat some objects as special files and present them differently.
